A common mode choke is a specialized two-winding inductor widely used in power supplies, adapters and circuit boards to suppress common-mode electromagnetic interference (EMI). Its core structure consists of a closed magnetic core and two identical coils wound oppositely on the same core with equal turns.
When normal differential-mode operating current flows through the two windings, currents run in opposite directions inside the magnetic core. The magnetic flux generated by each coil counteracts one another, leaving nearly no residual magnetic flux in the core. Under this condition, the choke presents extremely low impedance to regular working current and barely hinders normal circuit operation.
Common-mode noise interference flows in the same direction on two signal or power lines. The coinciding current creates magnetic flux that superimposes inside the core, producing large inductive impedance. High impedance effectively blocks common-mode noise and forces interference to drain via grounding instead of continuing along transmission lines.
Common mode chokes feature compact size, high noise attenuation and stable performance. They are essential components for filtering EMI in home appliances, industrial control equipment and new energy electronics, effectively helping products meet global EMC certification standards.
